It is similar to Swedish body massage but uses slow, deep and strongly rhythmic movements to reach the deeper muscle layers in the body. Deep tissue massage can help to relieve chronic patterns of pain and tension.

Deep tissue is used for chronic aches and pains, as well as a stiff neck, upper or lower back pain, leg muscle tightness and sore shoulders.


Deep tissue massage is unique in the sense that it is used to dissipate scar tissue and physically breaks down muscle “knots” or adhesions – bands of painful, rigid tissue – that can disrupt circulation and cause pain, a limited range of motion and inflammation.

Light pressure is applied at the beginning of the massage to warm up the muscles. Specific techniques are then applied, which include:

  • Stripping: deep, gliding pressure along the length of the muscle fibres using the elbow, forearm, knuckles, and thumbs
  • Friction: pressure applied across the grain of a muscle to release adhesions and realign tissue fibres

During a deep tissue massage your therapist will use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms. Your therapist may also ask you to breathe deeply as they work on tense areas.

After the massage, you may feel some stiffness or soreness, but it should subside within a day or so. 

Drinking water after the massage may help to flush the metabolic waste from the tissues. Some light bruising is also a possible side effect of deep tissue massage.
